1. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is the premier Postgraduate Medical Institution of the country. 3. Chittagong Medical University

I assume duties as the first Vice Chancellor of Chittagong Medical University on May 13, 2017. 5. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is a pioneer in engineering education in Bangladesh. The history of BUET dates back to 1876 when the Dhaka Survey School was founded. Later in 1947, it became an engineering college and gained independent university status in 1962. It is located on a compact 83.9-acre land in the heart of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

6. Shahjalal University of Science & Technology

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was established in 1986. The only university of its kind at that time, it started it”s journey on the 13th of February 1991 with only three departments: Physics, Chemistry and Economics, 13 teachers and 205 students. It has now expanded to 7 schools, 27 departments , 2 institutes and and centers. The number of teachers has grown to 552 and the students to 10922. Besides, the University has 13 affiliated colleges under the School of Medical Sciences with 4000 students.

7. University of Dhaka

On 31 January a delegation led by Nawab Sir Salimullah,Nawab Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury and Sher e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Hug met Viceroy Lord Hardinge on his visit to Dhaka (then Dacca) and raised the demand of the establishment of a University in the region.On 2 February a communique was published stating the decision of the Government of India to recommend the Constitution of a University at Dhaka.On 4 April the Government of British India invited the Government of Bengal to submit a complete scheme of the University.On 27 May the Government of Bengal published resolution in regard to the proposed University and appointed a Committee of thirteen members with Sir Robert Nathaniel as President to frame the scheme. The Committee, known as Nathan committee, submitted the scheme in the same year.

8. University of Chittagong

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was established in 1986. 9. Rajshahi University

The University of Rajshahi, also known as Rajshahi University or RU, is a public co-educational research university in Bangladesh situated near the northern Bangladeshi city of Rajshahi in a 305-hectare (753-acre) campus at Motihar, 3 kilometres (2 mi) East of the Rajshahi city center. It is the second largest, in terms of academic activities and also the second oldest university in Bangladesh. The university’s 60 departments are organized into ten faculties. It is considered one of the top research universities in Bangladesh. Researchers of this university have recently contributed a significant amount of effort and played a key role in bringing back medieval Bangladeshi Muslin fiber. It has a formidable alumnus base around Bangladesh and abroad. Because of its beautiful and well-planned verdurous campus, academic atmosphere and traditional inclination towards outdoor sports, it is popularly known as the Cambridge of the East.

10. Jahangirnagar University

Jahangirnagar University accustomed as a fully residential public university established in 1970 has now 36 departments and Six Faculties along with Four institutes, with added than fifteen thousand students, and about Five hundred academics adherent to teaching and research. The sprawling arresting campus is anchored 30 kilometres from the basic Dhaka, able-bodied affiliated with a civic highway. 11. Bangladesh Agricultural University

The campus, with an area of about 1200 acres is located in scenic rural surroundings on the western bank of the old Brahmaputra River, 5 km south from Mymensingh Railway Station and 120 km north from Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. It also houses two national research institutes, namely, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) and Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI).

12. Khulna University of Engineering & Technology

Khulna University of Engineering & Technology has a background of historical significance. Although this institution has completed an era as university, its laying foundation began 49 years ago. This university was established in 1967 as ‘Khulna Engineering College’ under the University of Rajshahi. But during the period of liberation war the development activities of the Erstwhile Engineering College was suspended. After the Independence of Bangladesh in the year of 1971, the development works were started again in swing full. Overcoming all the constraints, the academic activities of the institute were virtually started from June 03, 1974 as per special direction of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Despite some limitations, the college was affiliated as a faculty of Engineering under Rajshahi University. The academic and the administrative activities were controlled by the university authority and the Ministry of Education, respectively.

The physical infrastructures were constructed by the public works department, while teacher recruitment was accomplished through Public Service Commission. Owing to multiple authorities, the co-ordination became complicated and hence the college authority faced many problems to run it smoothly. Even the admission of new students was stopped in one session due to the scarcity of teachers. In these circumstances, through a collective effort organized by the students, teachers, officers, staff and professional bodies, the four Engineering Colleges of the country including Khulna Engineering College were converted into autonomous Institutes named as Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT) from July 01, 1986.

13. Bangladesh University of Textiles

14. Khulna University

Khulna University was established in 1991. There are 8 schools and 29 disciplines under these schools. The most promising characteristic of this university is that it is free from student politics. 15. Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology

Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) is the 2nd oldest prestigious public Engineering University of Bangladesh offers quality education and research in the field of engineering and technology. The university established in 1964 as Rajshahi Engineering College with three Engineering departments namely Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Civil Engineering. The institute started with Bachelor degree program and limited number of students (122) enrolled in three departments each year. Later it was converted to Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Rajshahi in 1986 to enhance the technical education.

The institute is upgraded as Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) in September, 2003 to enhance the technical education and research. The university is financed by the Government through the university Grants Commission of Bangladesh. The university is an autonomous statutory organization of the Government of Bangladesh functioning within the “Rajshahi University of Engineering &Technology Act 2003. Currently, the university comprises 14 departments including engineering and sciences offers under-graduate and post-graduate degrees. Every year 725 most brilliant students are enrolled for the undergraduate program (session 2014-2015) through transparent and standard admission test.

About 3000 students are pursuing their higher study in this green campus including under-graduate and post-graduate with over 200 prominent faculty members of diverse field of expertise. In graduate level, M.Sc. Engg., M. Engg., M.Phil and PhD programs and research are continuing in a qualitative manner under the faculties. The university also receive a significant numbers of international students are continuing their higher study in this campus. The medium of instruction and necessary assessment of this university is English.

16. Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology

Former Bangladesh Institute of Technology, Chittagong, abbreviated as BIT Chittagong is presently Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET). It is one of the prominent and prestigious autonomous self-degree-awarding institute in the engineering education of Bangladesh. This Institute was created out of Engineering College, Chittagong that was established in 1968. The Chittagong Engineering College functioned as the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Chittagong. Through a Government ordinance in 1986, the college was converted into an Institute of Technology. In 2003 this institute of technology was converted into a public university. The honorable President of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of the University.

17. Patuakhali Science & Technology University

The college was nationalized on 1 February 1985 and was placed under the administrative control of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Ministry of Agricultural together with BAU affiliation. The university was inaugurated on 08 July 2000 by the then Honorable Prime Minister, Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina and started its academic activities on 26 February 2002. The main campus of the PSTU is located at about 20 km north from the district town of Patuakhali and about 38 km south from the divisional city of Barishal. The outer campus is situated at Babuganj under Barishal district.

Being the lone university in the southern region of the country, the PSTU was established primarily to facilitate easy access to quality higher education to a populace who had been deprived of this prime right for a very long time since the independence of our beloved country.

18. Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University

The “Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act 2001″ was passed in the national Parliament on 09 July 2001. The foundation stone of the University was laid by the then Honorable Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina on 15 July 2001 and inaugurated the university activities through the appointment of the first Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Shadat Ulla. The Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University had started its formal functions on 11 September 2001 following the issuance of a notification by the Government as per requirement of the “Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act 2001″. As a public university, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University is a non-profit organization. All the expenditures are borne by the government grants

19. Jagannath University

Despite not gaining the status of a university until 2005, ‘Jagannath’ as an educational institution inherits the history ol a glorious past. 20. Comilla University

Comilla University (Bengali: কুমিল্লা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a public university located at Kotbari, Cumilla, Bangladesh. The university was constructed on 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land at Lalmai Bihar, Moynamoti. Comilla University is affiliated by University Grants Commission, Bangladesh.

It started with 7 functional departments. 21. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) is a government-financed 13th public university of Bangladesh. It is located at Salna, Gazipur.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University was established in 1998 as a public university with an act (Act no. 16) promulgated by the government of Bangladesh.

The university was established by transforming the Institute of Post Graduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA). IPSA was established as Bangladesh College of Agricultural Science (BCAS) in 1983 as an academic organ of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and academically affiliated with Bangladesh Agricultural University until 1991. In 1991, IPSA was made an autonomous institution. Henceforth, IPSA started its true course credit-based MS and PhD programs. The graduate program of IPSA was developed by a team of IPSA teachers led by Prof. L. M. Eisgruver of the Oregon State University (OSU), USA under the cooperation of JICA-USAID-GOB.

22. Islamic University Kushtia

Islamic University is ranked as one of the top public universities in Bangladesh as well as the largest seat of higher education in the south-western part of the country. Situated 24 kilometers south of Kushtia and 22 kilometers north of Jhenidah district-town, the university is by-passed by Khulna-Kushtia National Highway which provides its lifeline of connectivity with the rest of the country. 23. Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology

Located in a serene and green campus, Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET), Gazipur is only about twenty kilometers away from Shahjalal International Airport. DUET is unique in its scope and mission to foster engineering education in Bangladesh as it offers B.Sc. Engineering/B. Arch. degree only to the eligible diploma engineers from around the country. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs are also open for all eligible candidates who are capable of pursuing scholarly endeavors with a view to engaging in lifelong learning and thereby accelerating the innovation and developments in the field of engineering and technology.

24. Mawlana Bhasani Science & Technology University

Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University has been named after one of the renowned political leaders and philosophers of Bangladesh – Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani. Today’s MBSTU is the outcome of the dream which had been dreamt by him long ago. Mawlana Bhashani had the desire to establish a university that would build its students as independent, honest and hard working citizens.

He had proposed the name of this university “Islamic University”. Unfortunately his concerns of Islamic University had remained just a dream throughout his lifetime. Long after this spiritual leader`s death, a university named “Islamic University” did establish but this university was established in the district of Kustia instead of Tangail. After waiting a long period of time the Prime Minister of The Peoples Republic of Bangladesh “Sheikh Hasina” founded the foundation-stone of MBSTU at Santosh, Tangail in 1999.

25. Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University Dinajpur

Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University is the first Science and Technology University in the northern region of Bangladesh. It stands away from the urban Dinajpur and bustle at a beautiful and scenic location some 13km north of Dinajpur town by the side of the intercity highway that links Dinajpur to Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University was established as an Agricultural Extension Training Institute (AETI) to award a three-year diploma in agriculture. The AETI was later upgraded to Hajee Mohammad Danesh Agricultural College in 1988 having an affiliation from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Then the college was upgraded to the status of a university renaming it as Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University. First batch of the students were admitted at that time (1999-2000 session). The Act of the University was passed on 8 July 2001 in the Jatio Shongsad (National Assembly) was followed by a gazette notification on 8 April 2002.

26. Noakhali University of Science & Technology

The natural setting along with its human habitations of the Southern regions of Bangladesh has been endowed with the vast and immense potentials that can fully be harnessed only through creation of a band of skilled manpower equipped with the latest knowledge of science and technology. This University family is fully determined to gain its ultimate goal of success.The university was established on 15th July 2001 and started its academic activities on June 22, 2006. 27. Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

Since the 1990’s, size and nature of animal industry has been changing rapidly. Commercial dairy and poultry farming started recognizing as one of the most potential sectors for local and foreign investment. Livestock and poultry as a contributor to food security and nutrition has become one of the most important agenda for the policy makers and development partners.

Rapid urbanization and changes of food habit among the city dwellers has been accelerated bringing about the changes in food industry with a gradual demand in academic reforms and expansion in need for developing technology and more skilled manpower in animal health, food processing and marketing.

28. Bangladesh Open University

The need for an open university in Bangladesh was felt long ago. The history of distance education in Bangladesh dates back to 1956 when the Education Directorate was assigned with the responsibility for distribution of 200 radio receivers to educational institutions. This led to the creation of an Audio-Visual Cell, which was upgraded to the Audio-Visual Education Centre in 1962.

No further progress in distance education was made till 1971. After Independence, Bangladesh faced the challenge of meeting the educational needs of mass people. To meet this challenge the necessity for a new mode of education was widely felt. As a sequel to that feeling, the School Broadcasting Pilot Project was launched in 1978. The project was transformed into National Institute of Educational Media and Technology (NIEMT) in 1983.

29. National University of Bangladesh

25 years ago the National University was established by an Act of Parliament as an affiliating University of the country to impart graduate and post-graduate level education to the students through its affiliated colleges and professional institutions throughout the country. For that matter the University has been playing the most significant role in providing opportunities for higher education among the students coming from rural and semi-rural background at an affordable means since its inception.

It is almost an impossible task to run the affairs of the University effectively concerning its currently 2300 affiliated colleges and institutions from a single Headquarters by following a traditional method. Hence, apart from decentralization to Regional Centres, the present administration of the University has taken a number of measures to turn it into a digitized University based on wholesale networking. This will definitely help us overcome the colossal session jam from which the students are currently suffering.

30. Sylhet Agricultural University (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University)

31. Bangladesh University of Professionals

Establishment of a university for the armed forces educational and training institutes was a long felt need. National security, war strategy, medical, engineering and technology related to higher studies are in high demand at present. To keep pace and to be at par with the fast developing world, the national higher studies, research enabling modern knowledge and creating scope for education and studies are the obligations to be fulfilled.

In order to expand and integrate the existing educational and training institutes of the armed forces, they were needed to be brought under a single umbrella or authority. Thereby, the establishment of “Bangladesh University of Professionals,” (BUP) took place in that process and came in to being as 31st public university of Bangladesh on 05 June 2008. BUP is a unique public university run by the armed forces with upholding the motto “EXCELLENCE THROUGH KNOWLEDGE”. The youngest university is confident in furthering the knowledge in the field of national security, technology and modern science to achieve the desired human resources development of the country.

32. Pabna University of Science & Technology

The government passed the Act in 15 July 2001 to establish a science and technology university in Pabna. The university will be located in the district head quarter of Pabna. Pabna is a central district town in northern Bangladesh having long historical and cultural heritage. The academic curriculum of the Pabna University of Science and Technology was started on 05 June 2008. This university will play an innovative role in providing need-based higher education, training and research. Also the university will be committed to maintain and raise the quality and standard of higher education for the students as in international standards.

This practical and need-based curricula will produce highly qualified trained scientists and technologists for the needs of Bangladesh as well as the world employment market. The university offers education in science- and technology-based subjects for undergraduate and post graduate levels. This newly established university will occupies an area of about 30 acres, with a number of multi-storied buildings. Because of its location, it has already drawn the attention of brilliant students for admission and scholarly faculty members for teaching and research.

33. Jessore University of Science & Technology

34. Begum Rokeya University Rangpur

Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur is the only university in Rangpur divisional town. This university is the result of long days’ movement and demand of mass people of this area. This university was started  in 2001 during the period of then Awamileague Government in the name of ‘Rangpur Science and Technology University’ .The then government laid the foundation stone  of this university. But the next BNP- Jamat alliance Government stopped the activities of Rangpur Science and Technology University.

As a result this prospective university has not got its practical form. Later a university in the name of ‘Rangpur University’ was established on 12th October in 2008 by the then Care- Taker Government on demand of all walks of people of Rangpur. Here, it needs to mention that Rangpur University was established on the land acquired by Awami league Government in 2001. Rangpur University was renamed as ‘Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur’ by grand alliance government in 2009.

35. Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University was established by the Government of Bangladesh on 09 May 2006, though the initiative for its establishment was taken some years before, firstly by a non-official group of socio-cultural local elites, namely Greater Mymensingh Cultural Forum. The university was originally conceived to be built as the first cultural university in Bangladesh, but the JKKNIU Act enacted in 2006 made it a general university with a special focus on liberal-cum-performing arts education and research.

36. Barisal University

The declaration for establishing a Public University in the then Barishal division was made by the Founder of Bangladesh, the Father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1973. Several half-hearted attempts were made by the different political governments after 1980s but it was in 2009 that the establishment of the University got meaningfully underway by the Ministry of Education, and the Honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Md. Zillur Rahman appointed Professor Dr. Md. Harunor Rashid Khan of the Department of Soil, Water and Environment of the University of Dhaka on 18th February 2010 as the Project Director to establish the University of Barishal.

The law of the University of Barishal has been amended and passed by the National Assembly of Bangladesh on 16th June 2010. Thanks to further initiatives from University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Education, the University was eventually established by the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through foundation stone laying on 22nd February 2011
