  • MBBS Curriculum Update- 2012

The Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) curriculum in Bangladesh is designed to prepare future physicians with the comprehensive knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to contribute to the healthcare system effectively.

    MBBS Course Curriculum

The MBBS program in Bangladesh typically spans five years, followed by a mandatory one-year internship, making it a total of six years of medical education. This curriculum is regulated by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) and is structured to ensure that graduates meet both national and international standards for medical education.

Overview of the MBBS Curriculum Structure

The MBBS curriculum in Bangladesh is divided into four phases, covering pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical studies. Here’s a brief overview:

    1. First Phase (1.5 years)

    • Pre-clinical Subjects: This phase includes basic sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry. Students gain foundational knowledge of the human body, its functions, and the biochemical processes vital to life.

    2. Second Phase (1 year)

    • Para-clinical Subjects: This phase covers Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Forensic Medicine. Students learn about disease processes, the microorganisms responsible for diseases, therapeutic drugs, and legal aspects of medicine.

    3. Third Phase (1 year)

    • Clinical Subjects (Part 1): This phase introduces students to Community Medicine and introduces the basics of clinical subjects such as Medicine and Allied subjects, Surgery and Allied subjects, Obstetrics and Gynecology. The focus is on public health, preventive medicine, and the basics of clinical practice.

    4. Fourth Phase (1.5 years)

    • Clinical Subjects (Part 2): In the final phase, students dive deeper into clinical disciplines, including Medicine and its allied specialties (such as Pediatrics, Dermatology), Surgery and its allied specialties (such as Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology), Obstetrics and Gynecology, and subspecialties like Radiology, Anesthesiology, and Dentistry. This phase emphasizes hands-on clinical training in hospitals, where students interact with patients under the supervision of experienced doctors.

    Key Components of the Curriculum

    • Integrated Teaching: The curriculum promotes an integrated teaching approach, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications. Early clinical exposure is emphasized to bridge the gap between basic sciences and clinical practices.
    • Skill Development: Skills labs and simulations are integral to the curriculum, allowing students to practice clinical procedures in a controlled environment before performing them in real clinical settings.
    • Community-Based Learning: Students participate in community-based learning experiences, conducting field visits to rural and urban health centers. This approach helps students understand the health challenges in different community settings and the importance of primary healthcare.
    • Ethics and Professionalism: Ethical principles and professionalism are woven throughout the curriculum to ensure graduates are not only competent doctors but also ethical and professional in their practice.
    • Research: Encouragement of research activities, including participation in projects and presentations at scientific forums, to foster a culture of inquiry and evidence-based medicine.

    Internship

This internship is a critical component of medical education in Bangladesh, providing graduates with hands-on experience in various medical departments, including Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics.
